AN ORGANIZER’S NOTE
Good seating starts
with the whole day.
The opponents each player meets during a round depend on your tournament’s movement rules. Planning all the rounds together helps you look for repeat pairings before the first tile is dealt.
With smaller groups and more rounds, some repeats may be unavoidable. The goal is to reduce them while accommodating your tournament’s seating needs.

A few useful
details.

What do I need to use the workbooks?
You need desktop Microsoft Excel. Tournament Manager currently works on Windows computers only and requires macros to be enabled. It does not currently work on Apple (Mac) computers, but we are working on Mac compatibility. The Finance & Prize Payout Planner and Scoring & Leaderboard can each be used as standalone products on Windows or Mac computers with desktop Microsoft Excel; Tournament Manager is not required. These workbooks are not intended for Excel for the web, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, or phone-based score entry.
Are these tools for American Mahjong?
Yes. They are designed around American Mahjong tournaments, including morning and afternoon sessions, seating, scorecards, and prize planning.
Will every player get different opponents?
Tournament Manager is designed to minimize repeat opponents. The number of players, rounds, and seating constraints affects what is possible; zero repeats cannot be guaranteed for every tournament.
Can I choose preset prizes instead of using the calculated prize pool?
Yes. Calculate from Prize Pool uses ticket income minus event expenses and charity donations to determine the available player prize pool. Preset Awards lets you enter prize amounts independently of income and expenses. If your event’s applicable rules require a preset prize amount, use that option. Check the rules that apply to your event before setting awards; the planner does not determine which prize method is legally permitted.
Can I use the Finance & Prize Payout Planner separately?
Yes. The Finance & Prize Payout Planner can be used on its own or alongside Tournament Manager. Products are sold separately unless a listing explicitly states otherwise.
Where do I purchase or ask a question?
Visit Smart Mahjong Tools on Etsy to see current listings and contact Liz before purchasing. Tournament Manager currently requires Windows. The Finance & Prize Payout Planner and Scoring & Leaderboard can each work independently on a Mac with desktop Microsoft Excel.
